Jessica Grace Coleman

Hello, I'm Jessica Grace Coleman.

I'm a published author and experienced children's book editor with over 12 years in the industry and more than 1,600 completed projects. I've written ten books of my own, including The Little Forest Series for young readers.

I specialise in editing children's books because writing for young readers is genuinely different. The language needs to be just right for the age group, the pacing needs to hold short attention spans, and every word counts when you only have a few hundred of them.

I work with authors at every stage, from those with a completed manuscript to those with just an idea and no idea where to start. That's why I created the Children's Book Starter Kit.

I'm based in the Midlands in England and work remotely with children's book authors all over the world.

What Makes Children's Book Editing Different

Editing for young readers requires a specialist approach. Here's what I focus on.

Age-appropriate language

Vocabulary, sentence length, and complexity matched to your target age group, whether picture book readers or middle graders.

Pacing for young readers

Children have shorter attention spans. I make sure every page earns its place and the story moves at the right speed.

Text and illustration alignment

For picture books, the words and images need to work together. I edit with illustration placement in mind.

Genre conventions

Picture books, early readers, chapter books, and middle grade each have their own structure and expectations. I know what publishers and readers expect.

Engaging characters and themes

Young readers connect through relatable characters and clear themes. I help strengthen both without overwriting your voice.

Market awareness

Whether you are self-publishing or submitting to agents, I understand what the children's book market looks for right now.

What Children's Book Authors Say

What do you do if you struggle to read and write but you''ve always wanted to write a story? What do you do if you have a million crazy ideas but can''t seem to express them in a way others can understand? The answer is: seek the help and advice of expert editor, Jessica Coleman. As her initials ''JC'' suggest, she actually can perform miracles – that is, with text. She has a professional yet friendly approach and is willing to work with you every step of the way, so if you don''t know what you''re doing you can rest assured that at least someone does, and who better than Jessica? Jessica has helped me turn my puzzle adventure story into something I can be proud of. This service works well for those who want to be published but even more so for those who want to be confident in their work, and I have Jessica to thank for that. I guess what I''m trying to say is that with Jessica''s help, my book – my puzzle adventure – is solved!

Jessica helped me in the editing process of my first children''s story book. I found Jessica''s service to be fairly priced, prompt, and most of all her enthusiasm and passionate attitude to the craft of writing shines through when assisting on a project. I look forward to working with Jessica in the future.

Christopher Read

Author of ''Bruce Beaver''s Amazing Race''

I have had the pleasure of working with Jess on three of my books, and I can confidently say that she is the only editor I will trust with my writing. Jess has edited two of my children’s stories as well as one book aimed at older readers, and her professionalism, communication, and expertise have been consistently exceptional throughout every project. From the very first edit, Jess impressed me with her ability to take my somewhat rough manuscripts and turn them into polished, publishable stories. She always keeps me up to date during the editing process, communicating regularly and clearly about her progress. I never have to wonder where things stand or what the next step will be—Jess is always on top of it. My first book, Out of Time, was transformed by Jess’s skilful editing. What started as a ‘goodish’ story became an award-winning, critically acclaimed book, thanks to her keen editorial eye. Jess’s insights and suggestions elevated the story far beyond what I had originally imagined. I have no doubt her expertise was a key factor in the book’s critical success. She also edited my second book, The End, a science fiction novel aimed at older readers. Although this book is set to be published in August 2025, it has already garnered positive feedback, and I know Jess’s meticulous attention to detail played a huge role in that. Most recently, Jess completed a full developmental edit on my latest children’s story, Amelia Wainwright and the Chimera Project, and once again, she delivered work of the highest standard. I cannot recommend Jess highly enough. Her professionalism, talent, and dedication are second to none, and I will continue to rely on her for all my future projects.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about children's book editing.

How much does children's book editing cost?
Children's book editing starts from £300 for shorter picture books and goes up to £1,000+ for longer chapter books or comprehensive developmental edits. The exact cost depends on the word count and the type of editing you need. I provide a free, no-obligation quote within 24 hours.
What's the difference between in-depth and developmental editing for children's books?
In-depth editing focuses on grammar, spelling, punctuation, sentence structure, consistency, and flow. Developmental editing goes further and includes structural feedback on your story, chapter organisation, pacing, character development, and age-appropriate content. Both include a complimentary final proofread.
How long does children's book editing take?
Standard turnaround depends on the length of your manuscript and the type of editing. Most children's book projects are completed within 2 to 4 weeks. If you need a faster turnaround, the VIP Express Service delivers within 10 working days.
Do you edit picture books as well as chapter books?
Yes, I work with all types of children's books, from short picture books and early readers through to longer chapter books and middle grade fiction. Each format has its own requirements, and I tailor my approach accordingly.
Can you help if I'm just starting out with a children's book idea?
Absolutely. The Children's Book Starter Kit is designed for authors who have an idea but need help shaping it. It includes story outlines, character profiles, title suggestions, illustration guidance, and sequel ideas to give your project a strong foundation.
What is the Children's Book Starter Kit?
The Starter Kit is a unique package for first-time children's book authors. Rather than editing an existing manuscript, it helps you develop your concept from scratch. You'll receive story outlines, character profiles, title recommendations, illustration lists, and ideas for sequels or series. It's the perfect starting point if you know what you want to write but aren't sure where to begin.
